- To aid in the diagnosis of or rule out brain disorders such as dementia
- To identify strengths and weaknesses in thinking abilities
- To aid in treatment planning
- To set rehabilitation goals
- To define the patient's mental age
- To measure the amount of change in thinking, behavior or memory that come from brain injury or disease
- To help patients make the most of their potential
- To help physicians make medical decisions about patient care
- To provide information about the patient's recovery and prognosis
- To examine suitability for occupational roles
- To provide information about the presence, type and severity of problems in thinking, behavior or memory
- To assess the patient's emotional adjustment to thinking and behavior
problems after a head injury, stroke or other brain injury
- To determine how their thinking ability affects the patient's ability to
perform at work, learn in school, or handle new problems that come up in daily living
