When to order a neuropsychological evaluation.

  • To aid in the diagnosis of or rule out brain disorders such as dementia
  • To identify strengths and weaknesses in thinking abilities
  • To aid in treatment planning
  • To set rehabilitation goals
  • To define the patient's mental age
  • To measure the amount of change in thinking, behavior or memory that come from brain injury or disease
  • To help patients make the most of their potential
  • To help physicians make medical decisions about patient care
  • To provide information about the patient's recovery and prognosis
  • To examine suitability for occupational roles
  • To provide information about the presence, type and severity of problems in thinking, behavior or memory
  • To assess the patient's emotional adjustment to thinking and behavior problems after a head injury, stroke or other brain injury
  • To determine how their thinking ability affects the patient's ability to perform at work, learn in school, or handle new problems that come up in daily living.
